This is more important than just five alpha reductase and DHT production.
It’s the 5 alpha to 5 beta reductase ratio (5AR/5BR). Let me show you exactly why that matters.

What is 5 alpha and beta beta reductase
5 alpha reductase is the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, our most powerful androgen.
5 beta reductase is the enzyme that converts testosterone to 5β-reduced metabolites. These metabolites are very weak to neutral androgen receptor agonists.
Everyone has 5 alpha and 5 beta reductase, and at the end of the day, you have a ratio between 5 alpha and 5 beta. In the graph below you can see how androstenedione is converted into etiocholanolone and androsterone by 5 beta and 5 alpha reductase.

If you have a 1 to 1 ratio or you are more dominant to 5 beta even if you have enough DHT, you might experience low androgen sometimes. Because what happens is you have two pools. You have the 5 beta and 5 alpha pools, both of which compete for the androgen receptor.
So let’s say your 5 alpha pool is a 10 on a scale of 1-10. That does not mean you have good signaling. Because you have an equal amount of neutral steroids also competing for the same receptor.
Just by shrinking the five beta pool by a matter of competition, you now have stronger signaling on the androgen receptor because you have less competition at the androgen receptor. This is why this ratio matters so much.
Here’s what you can do. You can either make the 5 beta smaller, or you can make the 5 alpha larger or both.
The testosterone to DHT ratio isn’t accurate
Yes, you read that correctly. The testosterone to DHT ratio isn’t an accurate presentation of 5AR activity, but rather the androsterone to etiocholanolone ratio (R). You can only see this ratio on a DUTCH test.
You don’t just have DHT, you have a 5 alpha reduced pool, like all of the 5 alpha reduced steroids.

This is why the testosterone-to-DHT ratio isn’t accurate.
Let’s say you have a 10 to 1 testosterone to DHT ratio and your testosterone is 1000ng/dl and your DHT is 100ng/dl.
That’s not even a good metric to show you if you have a good five alpha pool because it doesn’t take into account the total 5 alpha reduced pool.
How to improve this ratio
The best way to improve this ratio is to optimize (or supplement) thyroid hormone T3. Your thyroid hormone, T3, dramatically stimulates 5 alpha-reductase. In the graph below, you can see how T3 stimulates 5AR.

In this study, they gave this guy T3 and you can see what happened (R). T3 increased androsterone and lowered etiocholanolone, thus shrinking the 5 beta and increasing the 5 alpha pool. Making you a lot more androgenic.

In the following study (R), T3 (200mcg; yes that’s a high dose) increased androsterone and decreased etiocholanolone. It dramatically increased the 5AR and decreased the 5BR, dramatically improving this ratio, and making this guy feel more androgenic.

How to optimize thyroid function
Here are some tips on how to improve your thyroid function:
- Consume a nutrient-dense diet
- Remove harmful foods that are causing oxidative stress or that contain goitrogens that inhibit thyroid hormone production
- Remove harmful things from the environment, like mold, heavy metals or plastics or any kind of chemical that might have a negative effect on the body.
